Moving house checklist: NZ timeline, weeks out to moving day
What to do, and when — plus the WOF, dog registration and council rates dates that keep ticking whether you're moving house or not.

Six to four weeks out
The early admin — the stuff that's cheap to get wrong if you leave it late, and easy to get right if you don't.
- ✓ Get two or three moving quotes and book one if you're using a mover — the closer to your date, the fewer options you'll have.
- ✓ Start a room-by-room declutter. Less to pack is less to carry, and less to unpack at the other end.
- ✓ If you're renting, check your tenancy agreement or talk to your landlord or property manager about your notice period — it varies by tenancy, so this is one to confirm directly rather than assume.
- ✓ Tell your insurer you're moving. A new address can change your premium, so it's worth a re-quote at the same time, not just an address update.

Three to two weeks out
This is when the actual switching happens.
- ✓ Set up your NZ Post mail redirect.
- ✓ Compare and switch (or book the switch for moving day) power, gas and broadband at the new address.
- ✓ Contact your bank or banks — most require this to be done by you directly, in the app or branch, for security reasons.
- ✓ Confirm the date, truck access and any stairs/lifts with your movers, if you've booked one.
- ✓ Start using up food that won't survive the move — freezer first.
The final week
The details that are easy to forget because they're not "the move" itself.
- ✓ Update your electoral roll enrolment and your NZTA address (driver licence and any vehicles) — these are two separate updates, not one.
- ✓ Check your new council's bin day and rates due date — search it on the rates hub.
- ✓ Pack an essentials box — chargers, medication, kettle, bedding, a change of clothes — that travels with you, not on the truck.
- ✓ Confirm final meter-reading arrangements with your power, gas and water providers.
- ✓ Re-register your dog at the new council if you're changing districts — do this before moving day, not after.
Moving day
- ✓ Take final meter readings at the old address, and first readings at the new one.
- ✓ Do a last walkthrough — cupboards, the garage, the letterbox, anywhere easy to forget.
- ✓ Keep your essentials box with you, not on the truck.
- ✓ Once you're in, work through updating your address everywhere else that still has the old one — banks, IRD, insurers, subscriptions.

No — WOF and rego run on their own schedule regardless of where you live, so moving doesn't reset or pause either one. Letting a WOF lapse more than two months carries a $350 infringement fee from 1 November 2026 (NZTA).
