Terms of use
The plain-English terms for using Deets
Last updated 1 August 2026 · independent legal review completed August 2026
These are the terms for using Deets, the free New Zealand life-admin app at deets.co.nz. By creating an account or using the app, you're agreeing to them. If anything here doesn't match what the product actually does, tell us — that mismatch is a bug in the terms, not a trap.
1. Deets is free, and there's no subscription
Every feature described on deets.co.nz is free to use — there is no paid tier, no subscription, and no payment flow anywhere in the app. Deets makes money from disclosed referral commissions (see clause 3), not from charging you.
2. Deets is in beta
Deets carries a "Beta" badge on the site for a reason: it's live and working today, with a few things still being built, and we ship changes to it continuously — sometimes several times a week. That means the app can change, features can be added or adjusted, and occasionally something can break before we catch it. We try to be clear about what's live and what's still coming (see the Security section on the homepage), but "beta" is a real status, not a formality.
3. Referral commissions are how Deets makes money, and how we handle your information around them
We want to be upfront about this, plainly, because it involves both money and your information: Deets earns a referral commission where it shows you a real provider to switch to or connect with (for example, on a compare page, once a partner rail for that category is live) and you go ahead with them. This is disclosed on the page it applies to, it doesn't change the order providers are shown in, and a free, do-it-yourself route is shown too — Deets shows that first.
As of this policy's last-updated date, Deets does not share your personal information with any referral partner — clicking a partner link (for example, "Connect via Movinghub") is a plain outbound link, and nothing about you travels with it. If a specific referral ever genuinely needs us to hand over details of yours for it to work, we'll say so plainly at that moment, before it happens, and it will be your own action that shares it — see "Referral partners" in our Privacy policy for the full picture.
4. Deets is an organiser, not an adviser
Deets is an organiser, not an adviser. We don't give financial or legal advice.
Everything in Deets — penalty amounts, due dates, "what forgetting this costs" figures — is general information to help you keep track of your own household admin. It is not personalised financial, legal or professional advice, and you shouldn't treat it as a substitute for advice from a qualified adviser, your bank, your insurer, or the relevant government agency for anything that actually matters to your situation.
5. You're responsible for your own deadlines — Deets is a convenience, not a guarantee
This is the single most important clause in these terms, so we're saying it plainly rather than burying it: Deets is a tool to help you keep track of your own deadlines. It is not a guarantee that you won't miss one, and using Deets does not transfer that responsibility to us.
As of this policy's last-updated date, Deets can email you about what's coming up if you have an account with reminders on (the default) — a weekly digest, plus a separate email for anything genuinely urgent. Full detail, including how to turn it off, is in our Privacy policy. What's still true, and is the exact thing this clause exists to protect against: Deets does not send a push notification (that doesn't exist yet), and even with reminder emails on, an email can go unread, land in spam, or simply not reach you. Don't rely on Deets alone to make sure you never miss a WOF, rego, passport renewal or anything else with a real penalty attached — check the app, and keep whatever other reminder system (a calendar, a physical letter, your own memory) you'd normally trust.
To put that plainly: you must not treat Deets as your only warning for a deadline that carries a financial consequence if you miss it — a fine, a penalty, a loss of cover, or anything similar. Where a deadline like that matters to you, verify the date against the relevant authority's own notice or correspondence (for example, NZTA for a WOF or rego, the Department of Internal Affairs for a passport, or your insurer for a renewal) rather than relying on a figure or date shown in Deets alone.
The due dates, penalty amounts and "what missing it costs" figures in Deets are researched to be accurate at the time they're added, but rules and fees change — confirm anything that actually matters (an exact fee, an exact deadline) with the relevant official source before relying on it.
6. Acceptable use
Deets is built for a household, so it's normal to add details that belong to someone else in it — a partner's driver licence, a child's birthday, a flatmate's vehicle. By adding another person's information to Deets, you're confirming you have the right to do so — their permission, or that you're their parent or legal guardian.
Inviting someone into your household, or accepting an invitation yourself, means agreeing to the data-sharing described on those screens at the time — see our Privacy policy for what that covers.
You agree to use Deets fairly. In particular, you won't:
- use Deets for anything unlawful, or to store or share information you don't have the right to store or share;
- try to break, bypass or probe Deets' access controls, security, or the systems that keep one household's data separate from another's;
- scrape, systematically extract, or resell data or content from Deets;
- impersonate someone else when creating an account, or create an account using an email address that isn't yours;
- abuse the referral links or compare pages (for example, generating fake referral clicks) — this is how a free product for everyone else gets funded.
We can suspend or terminate access for an account that breaches this clause.
7. Your account, and ending it
You don't need an account to use Deets — without one, your data lives only on your own device. Creating a free account backs your data up to Deets' servers, syncs it across devices, and is what lets Deets email you a reminder (clause 5) — there's no address to send one to otherwise. Deets actively encourages creating an account, with prompts at a few points as you use the app; each is dismissible without ever being permanent.
You can delete your account at any time from Profile in the app. This is immediate and real — it removes your household's data from Deets' live system straight away, not a request that's actioned later — see our Privacy policy for exactly what that covers and how long backup copies are kept afterwards. If you share a household with someone else, see the in-app deletion screen for what happens to their data (it isn't touched).
We can suspend or close an account that breaches clause 6, or if we reasonably believe it's necessary to protect Deets or other users.
8. Your data, and what we do with it
The deadlines, ID details, pets, vehicles and everything else you add to Deets remain yours. How we store it, who can see it, and how you can get it out again is covered in full in our Privacy policy — these terms don't repeat all of that, but it's part of the same agreement.
9. Deets' own content
The Deets name, logo, design and the site/app's own text and code belong to Lika Limited (or its licensors). Nothing in these terms gives you rights to Deets' branding or code beyond normal use of the app itself.
10. Limitation of liability
Deets is provided free of charge and on an "as is" basis. To the maximum extent the law allows, we exclude all warranties and are not liable for any loss arising from your use of Deets, including missed deadlines, penalties, fees, or reliance on any figure or date shown in the app.
To the maximum extent the law allows, and subject to the carve-out below, we also exclude liability for any indirect, special or consequential loss arising from your use of Deets — including lost time, lost savings, or any downstream cost that follows from a missed deadline — even where that loss was foreseeable or we were aware it was possible.
Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any right or remedy you have under the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act 1993, the Fair Trading Act 1986, or any other law that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited by agreement. Where the law does allow it to be limited, our liability to you is limited to the greatest extent the law permits.
11. Changes to Deets and these terms
Because Deets is in beta and ships continuously (clause 2), features described here can change, be added to, or be temporarily unavailable. We'll update this page when we change these terms in a way that matters, and change the date at the top. Continuing to use Deets after a change means you accept the updated terms.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of New Zealand, and any dispute relating to them is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
