Penalties for paying late
“A 10% penalty is applied to any unpaid rates after the due date.” — Gisborne District Council's own wording.
A fixed 'Penalty date' shown per instalment, 4–6 calendar days after that instalment's due date — 26 Aug 2026 / 26 Nov 2026 / 26 Feb 2027 / 26 May 2027 for the 2026/27 year. Metered water rates carry a separate 10% penalty applied 5 working days after their own due date — a different timing regime from the general schedule.
Paying your rates

- ✓ Card payments: None — "There are no bank fees on credit card transactions" (council's own wording, QuickPay online payments).

Dog registration page: 'This must be paid by 31 July. A 25% late penalty fee is applied to all late payments after 1 August.' The Dog fees and charges page states the same in slightly different words: 'Pay by 31 July to avoid an additional 25% penalty fee on top of the fees below. The penalty is applied to all late payments received after 31 July.' Both pages agree on the 25% figure and the 31 Jul / 1 Aug boundary.
