Penalties for paying late
“A penalty, equivalent to 10% of the instalment amount remaining unpaid at the close of day on the 'last date for payment', shall on the above dates be added to that amount of unpaid rates. Pursuant to Sections 57/58 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002, a further penalty of 10% will be added to all rates and charges that remain unpaid on 30 June 2027. Payments are applied to the oldest debt first.” — Marlborough District Council's own wording.
10% applied the day after each instalment's 'last date for payment' — 12 Sep 2026 / 12 Dec 2026 / 12 Mar 2027 / 12 Jun 2027 for 2026/27 (one day after the 11th-of-month due date). A further 10% is added 30 June 2027 to any rates/charges of the year still unpaid. Metered water carries its own separate penalty, also 10%, applied the day after ITS 'last date for payment' (30 Nov 2026 / 28 Feb 2027 / 30 May 2027 / 31 Aug 2027) — a much longer due-to-penalty gap than general rates because the metered-water due date itself is already ~1 month after the general instalment cycle.
Paying your rates
