Penalties for paying late
“A penalty of 10% is added to each unpaid instalment. A penalty charge of 10% will be added on 2 July 2026 to any balance from a previous rating year (including penalties previously charged) remaining outstanding on 30 June 2026. A further additional charge of 10% will be added on 8 January 2027 to any amounts to which a penalty has been added on 2 July 2026 that remain unpaid.” — Nelson City Council's own wording.
Per-instalment 10% is applied on a fixed 'Penalty Applied' date shown for each instalment (26 Aug 2026 / 26 Nov 2026 / 26 Feb 2027 / 26 May 2027 for the 2026/27 year) — a few days after the 'Due Date for Payment' shown for that same instalment. A second-layer 10% is added 2 July on prior-year arrears, and a third-layer 10% on 8 January on anything still unpaid after the 2 July charge.

Dog registration
Dog Licence and Registration page: 'Registrations are due by 30 June each year and must be renewed annually by the same date... There is a grace period of up to one month, however failure to register your dog before 31 July will incur an infringement fine as well as late registration fee.' The Dog Ownership Fees page states the same rule with the actual figure: 'A late payment penalty of 50% of the registration fee shall apply to all registrations remaining unpaid on 1 August and all dogs unregistered after 1 August can be impounded and incur a further $300.00 infringement fee in addition to any registration fee, plus penalty.'
