Penalties for paying late
“If you do not pay your rates instalment in full by the due date, we charge 10 per cent of any amount owing. If you have unpaid rates and penalties at the end of the rating year, we charge a further 10 per cent on this outstanding amount. We will apply a further 10 per cent penalty to any amounts still unpaid six months after the end of the rating year. We do not charge GST on rates penalties.” — Auckland Council's own wording.
10% applied to any instalment amount unpaid after its own due date; a further 10% applied to any rates and penalties still unpaid at the end of the rating year (30 June); a further 10% on any amount still unpaid six months after the end of the rating year — a three-step escalation, more layers than any other council found this sweep except Kaipara's four-layer regime (same batch).
Paying your rates

- ✓ Card payments: 1.75% online (Visa/MasterCard); 0.67% in person at libraries with council services.
A flexible plan doesn't move the formal due date — the penalty above still applies if you fall behind against each instalment, even if you're paying weekly.
