Penalties for paying late
“If you do not pay your rates instalment in full you will receive a penalty of 10% for any amount that is overdue after the following dates: Instalment One 21 August 2026 (10%), Instalment Two 21 November 2026 (10%), Instalment Three 21 February 2027 (10%), Instalment Four 21 May 2027 (10%). You won't be charged a penalty if you enter into a payment arrangement by direct debit and honour that arrangement. On 3 July 2026 you will also be charged a 10% penalty for any part of the rates from previous years that have not been paid by 3 July 2026. On 6 January 2027 an additional 10% will be added to any balance still remaining unpaid as at 5 January 2027. For water by meter rates, a penalty of 10% of the amount outstanding on each bill will be added after the due date.” — Kaipara District Council's own wording.
10% applied the day after each instalment's own due date (21 Aug / 21 Nov / 21 Feb / 21 May for the 2026/27 year, i.e. one day after each 20th-of-the-month due date) — a per-instalment penalty date captured here rather than folded into dueDate, the same treatment as Far North's 7-day gap, just a 1-day gap here; a separate prior-year arrears penalty is layered on top: 10% on 3 July 2026 on any previous-years' balance still unpaid, and a further 10% on 6 January 2027 on any balance still unpaid as at 5 January 2027; no penalty at all if paying via an honoured direct-debit arrangement; water-by-meter bills carry their own separate 10% late-payment penalty (see waterBilledSeparately).
