Penalties for paying late
“The Council will charge a penalty of 10% on any part of each respective instalment for rates (excluding water by meter rates and warmer homes scheme targeted rate) that remains unpaid after the due date.” — South Taranaki District Council's own wording.

Paying your rates

- ✓ There's an early-payment discount: In accordance with Section 55 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002, a discount of 2% of the total year's rates, excluding water by meter rates, will be allowed where they are paid in full on or before 26th August 2026 (the 1st instalment due date).
- ✓ Card payments: 1% per transaction, applied by the Council to Rates and Water rates paid by credit card (Visa/Mastercard) via its Westpac-provided online payment service.

Dog Registration page states both: 'Dog registrations are due on 1 July of each year and cover the 12-month period to 30 June of the following year' and, in the fee table itself, 'Late Payment Penalty (If paid after due date of 31 July) — A 50% penalty will be applied to the outstanding fee balances on 1 August 2026. Select Owners with an outstanding fee balance will have their policy revoked.'
