Penalties for paying late
“Under section 57 and 58 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002, a 10 percent (10%) penalty will be added to any portion of the current instalment that remains unpaid after the due date as shown below. [Arrears] Under section 57 and 58 of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002, an additional 10 percent (10%) penalty will be added on to any rates remaining unpaid from previous financial years on the dates below.” — South Wairarapa District Council's own wording.
Distinct penalty dates per general-rates instalment (2026/27 Rates Resolution): 31 Aug 2026 (for the 20 Aug instalment), 30 Nov 2026 (for 20 Nov), 26 Feb 2027 (for 20 Feb), 31 May 2027 (for 20 May) — a genuinely varying gap (11, 10, 6 and 11 days after the due date respectively), not a fixed day-count. The metered-water annual instalment (due 20 Aug 2027) carries its own penalty date of 31 Aug 2027; the high-use December reading (due 20 Feb 2027) carries penalty date 26 Feb 2027. Arrears: a further 10% on any prior-year balance still unpaid, applied 2 Jul 2026, and again 5 Jan 2027 if still unpaid.

The Dogs page's fee-table accordion is headed 'Fees due by 31 July 2026' / 'Late fees from 1 August 2026 (GST inclusive)', and its Legal Notice text states outright: 'A late registration fee of an additional 50% will be imposed for all dogs registered after 1 August 2026.'
