Penalties for paying late
“"All outstanding rates after the last day for payment for each instalment will incur a penalty equating to 10% of the rates instalment value. Any rates outstanding at 30 June (relating to the current and prior years) will incur a further 10% penalty." (paying-your-rates page, current/plain-language wording). The formal 2026/27 Rates Resolution states the same via a dated table (10% penalty added 30 Sep 2026 / 6 Jan 2027 / 31 Mar 2027 / 30 Jun 2027 for instalments 1-4 respectively), plus a further 10% on any amount unpaid from previous years still unpaid at 1 July 2026, added 1 July 2026.” — Southland District Council's own wording.

Dog registration page's own checklist: 'registration needs to be renewed by 1 July each year' and 'anyone found in possession of an unregistered dog is liable to receive a $300 infringement fee.' The current 2026/27 Schedule of Fees and Charges PDF instead frames the practical cutoff as 1 August: registration is described as paid "'on time' by 1 August", and states outright 'Late payment fee - registration paid after 1 August: Percentage of applicable fee, +50%' (repeated for both the working/stock-dog table and the pet-dog table); Dangerous dog registration separately carries its own 'Percentage of applicable fee, +50%' line, worded without an explicit date attached to it (may be the same late-fee rule or a standing dangerous-dog surcharge -- not resolved).
