Ordinary water use is included in general rates, but Water Meter Rates is billed on its own schedule.

Penalties for paying late
“General rates: "CURRENT PENALTIES" table in the 2026/27 Annual Plan's Funding Impact Statement — a 10% penalty is added to the outstanding balance of each instalment, applied on the penalty date "Five business days after the due date". Water Meter Rates carry their own separate 10% penalty table applied on fixed calendar dates (1 Dec 2026 / 1 Mar 2027 / 1 Jun 2027 / 1 Sep 2027) rather than a business-days-after rule. A further "Rates Arrears Penalty" of 10% ("Annual Penalty") applies to unpaid prior-year balances from 1 July 2026 (or 5 business days after Council passes the rates resolution, whichever is later), with a further 10% ("Other Penalty") six months after that.” — Grey District Council's own wording.

Paying your rates
- ✓ You can pay by weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, and annual, not just as one lump sum.
- ✓ Direct debit is available.
- ✓ There's an early-payment discount: A 2.5% discount will apply where all due rates are paid in full, together with any outstanding prior years' rates and penalties, by 4.30pm on the due date for payment of the first instalment..

Dog registration
Standard Registration Fee applies if paid by 31 July 2026; the Registration Fee that will apply from 1 August 2026 is exactly 50% higher for every category (e.g. Pet (entire) $143.00 -> $214.50). The council's Dog Registration page separately states: 'You must register your dog(s) by 31 July every year to avoid penalties.'
