Penalties for paying late
“A 10% penalty will apply under section 58(1)(a) if any rates payments remain outstanding after each of the instalment due dates, applied after 5 business days. A 10% penalty will be added to any rates set prior to 1 July 2026 that were unpaid at 30 June 2026, added within 5 business days of Council passing its rates resolution (s58(1)(b)(i)). A further 10% penalty will be added under s58(1)(c) to rates remaining unpaid from previous years, 6 months after the prior-year penalty, if still unpaid. Council's own note: these amount to the equivalent of 21% per annum, since each subsequent penalty is on the full amount outstanding including previous penalties.” — Westland District Council's own wording.
