Penalties for paying late
“Current rates penalties: A charge of 10% will be applied to any portion of the current instalment not paid on or before the penalty date shown. Rate arrears penalties: Continuing additional charges of 10% are added on 6 July and 6 January each year to the amount of rates and additional charges that remain unpaid from previous years.” — Waipā District Council's own wording.
10% applied on the specific 'penalty added from' date published for each instalment — not a fixed day-count, roughly a week after the due date (due 21 Aug 2026 / penalty 28 Aug; due 23 Nov / penalty 1 Dec; due 22 Feb 2027 / penalty 2 Mar; due 21 May / penalty 28 May). A further 10% is added on any prior-year arrears unpaid, applied 6 July and 6 January each year. Per the Rates FAQ, a penalty is automatically remitted if payment is made within 14 working days of the penalty date and no other penalty has been incurred that financial year — no application needed in that case.
Dog registration
Dog registration page: 'Registrations are due Tuesday, June 30. Remember your payment needs to be made by June 30 each year. Penalty fees will be added to any dogs registered after Friday, July 31.' Restated identically in the fee-table notes: 'Dog registration fees are due by 30 June and must be paid by 31 July to avoid penalties... from 1 August the applicable fee will increase by 50 percent as provided for in the Dog Control Act 1996.' The penalty does not apply within 14 days of acquiring a dog or of the dog turning three months old.
