Penalties for paying late
“If you do not pay your rates by the instalment due date there will be a 10% penalty. A further 10% penalty is added to any unpaid rates on 1 July following the due date. An additional 10% will be incurred every six months thereafter.” — Kaikōura District Council's own wording.
The day after each instalment's 'last day for payment' (the single date given per instalment - unlike Mackenzie's separate due-date/last-payment-date pair, Kaikoura's own page states only one date per instalment and treats it as both).

kaikoura.govt.nz's own 'Dog Registration and Control Area Map' page (headed 'Register your dog now for 2026 - 2027'): 'Late registration penalties (In accordance with Dog Control Act) + 50% late registration charge is added to all payments received after 1 August. For example: Single dog registration received after the 1 August is $120 ($80+50%).' The council's separately published, formally adopted 'Fees & Charges final 2026-2027.pdf' (effective from 1 July 2026) instead states: 'A 50% penalty will be applied if a registration has not been completed by the owner by 30 August 2026.' Both are current, live, council-published sources for the same 2026/27 year and disagree by almost a full month on when the 50% penalty actually attaches.
