Penalties for paying late
“A penalty of 10% will be added to any amount of an instalment of rates remaining unpaid after the relevant due date. A further penalty of 10% will be added to any rates from previous years that remain unpaid on 1 July 2026 (applied 15 July 2026), and a further 10% on any amount to which that penalty was added that remains unpaid on 15 January 2027 (applied 15 January 2027).” — Ruapehu District Council's own wording.

Paying your rates
- ✓ You can pay by weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, and annual, not just as one lump sum.
- ✓ Direct debit is available.
- ✓ Card payments: 2.49% per transaction (minimum fee $1.00) — a BNZ service fee, not retained by Council.

Dog registration
Owners are required to register their dogs by 30 June each year, failing which an additional late fee of 50% of the base fee will apply. (Confirmed by direct calculation against the council's own 2026/27 fee table: every 'paid by 30 June' figure is exactly 1/1.5 of the corresponding standard figure, e.g. Entire dogs $129.50 -> $194.25.)
