Penalties for paying late
“Note: payments made after the due date will incur a 10% penalty. (Council's own current, non-year-dated 'How To Pay Your Rates' page; matches the wording on the stale 2025/26 'Due Dates & Penalties' page: 'A penalty of 10 percent is added to each instalment or part thereof "current rates" which are unpaid after the due date for payment.')” — Tararua District Council's own wording.
10% applied 2 days after each general-rates instalment due date (2 Sep 2026/2 Dec 2026/2 Mar 2027/2 Jun 2027); a further 10% arrears penalty on pre-1-Jul-2026 rates unpaid at 10 Jul 2026 (added 13 Jul 2026); a further 10% on that same arrears balance if still unpaid at 10 Jan 2027 (added 11 Jan 2027); metered water rates carry their own separate 10% penalty 2 days after their own due date (22 Oct 2026/22 Jan 2027/22 Apr 2027/22 Jul 2027) — now LIVE-confirmed for 2026/27, no longer carried from the stale 2025/26 page.
Paying your rates

- ✓ Direct debit is available.
- ✓ Card payments: 1.5% (minimum $1.00 per transaction).

Dog Registration page's own 'Key dates for dog owners': '1 June – Council begins accepting payments for the upcoming registration period. 1 July – Previous registration period ends and registration is due for the new period. 31 July – Registration fees due - avoid late fees by registering on or before this date. 1 August – Late fees apply: 50% of the base fee.' Footnote: 'the standard late registration penalty for dogs is an additional 50% of the base fee if registered after the due date... consistent across local councils, including the Tararua District.'
