Penalties for paying late
“A penalty of 10% will be added to each instalment or any portion of it if not paid on or before the due date. An additional penalty of 10% will be incurred on rates remaining unpaid as at the following 1 January, and further charges of 10% will be incurred at six-monthly intervals thereafter on the balance of rates owing from previous rating years.” — Waimate District Council's own wording.
Stated as applying when an instalment "is not paid on or before the due date" — Waimate's own page does not give a separate numbered penalty-application date distinct from the due date itself. This standing penalty-policy wording comes from Waimate's evergreen "How To Pay Your Rates" page, which itself still shows stale 2025/26 instalment dates; the adopted 2026/27 Rates Resolution (30 June 2026) sets the due dates above but contains no penalty clause of its own, so the percentage/timing is carried from the standing policy page rather than re-stated per year — flagged lower-confidence pending a future batch cross-checking it against a more current statement.
