Penalties for paying late
“An instalment penalty of 5% will be charged on the next working day after the due date on any balance of the current instalment which has not been paid by close of business on the due date. Council will impose a 3% penalty on any previous year's rates that remain outstanding on 1 July 2026 (to be added 3 July 2026), and a further 3% penalty on any portion of the amount still outstanding (including any previous arrears penalties) on 5 January 2027 (to be added 6 January 2027).” — Kawerau District Council's own wording.
5% applies the next working day after each instalment's own due date; a further 3% applies 3 July 2026 to any prior year's rates still unpaid on 1 July 2026, and another 3% applies 6 January 2027 to whatever of that arrears balance (including the first 3%) is still outstanding on 5 January 2027 -- a three-step 5%+3%+3% structure.

Dog registration timeline (council's own wording, from its Dog Registration page): '28 May 2026 – Notices Issued; 1 July 2026 – Last day for registration; 2 July 2026 – Late registration reminder letters issued; 1 August 2026 – Late fee applied (50% penalty); 2 August 2026 – Letter issued advising of 50% penalty added to registration fee; 17 August 2026 – Infringements for unpaid registration issued (Dog registration is still required to be paid).' The current 2026/27 fee schedule PDF separately states 'LATE PAYMENT PENALTY – 50% addition to the original fee charged.'
